Pre-Save Campaigns: What They Do and How to Run One
A pre-save lets a listener save a song to their library before it comes out, so it appears for them on release day. It is one of the few promotion tools that turns pre-release attention into a concrete action.
How it works
Most distributors and several link tools generate a pre-save link once your release is delivered with a future date. A fan clicks it, connects their streaming account, and the song is added automatically when it goes live. Some tools also support pre-adds for other services.
Why it is worth doing
- It gives fans something to do with their excitement before release day.
- It tells you how much interest a song has before it comes out.
- It puts the song in front of people on day one without them having to remember.
Running one in five steps
- Deliver early. Get the release to your distributor with plenty of lead time so the link is ready weeks ahead.
- Make one clear link. Use a single landing page and put it everywhere: bio, posts, email, video descriptions.
- Give a reason. Tease the hook, share the story, or offer something small, such as early access to a lyric video.
- Remind, don't nag. Mention it a few times in the weeks before release, with new content each time.
- Say thank you. On release day, thank people who pre-saved and tell them it is live.
Be realistic
A pre-save is a starting point, not a guarantee of playlist placement. It works best as part of wider music promotion across pitching, content and community.
